A school crosswalk sign is specifically designed to alert drivers to the presence of children who may be crossing the street, especially near schools. It signifies that a pedestrian crossing is imminent, indicating drivers should be prepared to stop for children and other pedestrians who may enter the crosswalk. This signage is crucial for enhancing safety in areas where children are likely to be walking, thus ensuring that drivers exercise caution and reduce their speed as needed.

The other options focus on different traffic scenarios that do not pertain to the specific function of a school crosswalk sign. For example, a speed limit reduction sign informs drivers about changes in the speed limits, while a yield to bicycles sign indicates when drivers need to give way to cyclists. A construction zone ahead sign warns drivers of roadwork, which may necessitate detours or reduced speeds, but none of these alternatives focus on pedestrian crossings as the school crosswalk sign does.
